Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.

Africa Day, observed annually on 25 May, marks the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963—an historic moment that codified the vision of African nations for unity, self-determination, and socio-political liberation. This commemoration is a strategic moment for advancing the African Union’s Pan-African policy agenda and renewing the continent’s commitment to the integration and renaissance as stipulated in the Agenda 2063. The 2025 commemoration assumes exceptional significance under the 2025 African Union Theme of the Year: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations,” as adopted through Assembly Decisions 884. In this context, the 2025 theme, “Revisiting Our History, Shaping Our Future,” anchors the celebration in both remembrance and transformation by connecting the historical struggles against enslavement, colonialism, and systemic exploitation with contemporary movements for reparatory justice and equitable global partnerships. The commemoration at the African Union Headquarters will provide a timely and transformative platform to reflect on the enduring legacies of historical injustices while galvanizing collective momentum towards a future grounded in justice, dignity, and inclusive development. This Africa Day is envisioned as a ceremonial observance and a policy-driving event that will deepen intellectual discourse, strengthen diplomatic and multilateral cooperation, and mobilize key actors around the reparatory justice agenda. Moreover, in recognizing the African diaspora as the sixth region of the AU and a critical pillar of the continent’s future, Africa Day 2025 will also spotlight the need to reinvigorate linkages between the continent and its global diaspora. This is in line with Agenda 2063, particularly Aspiration 5, which calls for an Africa with a strong cultural identity, common heritage, and shared values and ethics, and Aspiration 2, emphasizing an integrated, politically united, and self-determined continent.

About this year's Theme “Revisiting Our History, Shaping Our Future”.

The theme is a strategic invocation of Africa’s past to shape a transformative future. It invites reflection on the continent’s historical journey, while serving as a catalyst for renewed action to address the root causes and persistent impacts of slavery, colonization, neo-colonialism, racial injustice, and their modern manifestations. The 2025 theme advances the AU’s broader agenda to institutionalize memory as a mechanism for policy and social transformation towards “building a united front” in this endeavour. It affirms that remembrance is not passive nostalgia, rather, a vital political and developmental tool that enables societies to heal, reclaim agency, and forge progressive pathways grounded in truth, equity, and mutual accountability. By reconnecting historical awareness with present-day continental and global challenges, the theme emboldens Africans and people of African descent to shape a common destiny defined by justice, dignity, and shared prosperity.
