The African Union declared 2026 as the Year of "Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063" to elevate water security as a top continental priority.

Key Objectives
  1.  Reaffirm water and sanitation as key drivers for health, industrialization, and climate resilience.
  2.  Endorse a new continental policy framework adopted at the 39th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly in February 2026.
  3. Address an estimated annual shortfall of US$ 30 billion needed to reach basic water and sanitation targets.
  4.  Manage shared water resources, noting that 60% of African freshwater and 90% of surface water cross national borders.
